Press Release from our first time on Cupcake Wars

 

VISTA, CA, April 2nd, 2012 – Last night Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen was chosen as the winner of the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars!

Each week on Cupcake Wars, four baking teams from across the country compete in three elimination challenges until only one remains. Sunday evenings competition was themed around the hilarious internet sensation “Funny or Die,” which features videos that Little Cakes’ staff is quite familiar with.

Little Cakes Owner Don Hein and head baker Amanda Suvia competed on the show and created the following cupcake flavors for the show’s challenges:

•Rhu-Fluffernutter-Nanner-Barb – A banana-rhubarb cake filled with marshmallow fluff and topped with Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting.
•The Pearl – A sweet almond cake filled with Bavarian cream, topped with Champagne Italian Buttercream and edible pearls.
•Mayan Macaroon – A rich chocolate cinnamon cake, topped with vanilla Italian Buttercream, rolled in toasted coconut and drizzled with chocolate ganache
•Drunken Pumpkin – A rum pumpkin cake with chocolate chips, Cinnamon Italian Buttercream and edible chocolate balls.

Little Cakes was very honored to take home the top prize after the grueling day of competing, which took place in October, 2011, in Los Angeles. Don is extremely grateful to his strong support system, including wife, Becky Hein, family, friends and the shop’s staff.

“We could not have done this without so many amazing people supporting us. Starting with the inspiration of my brother and his partner, Mike Hein and Tony Portugal, the co-owners of the Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company in Seattle, Washington, who taught me everything I know about cupcakes, to the stoic confidence of Amanda, who I relied on for her strong knowledge base during all the madness, and, of course, the reliability of our amazing staff, especially Kitchen Manager Torie Tobey, who we left in charge of the shop while we went off to war,” Don said. “All of these elements gave me the confidence to not only do the show, but to actually enjoy the experience.”

At Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen, Vista residents and co-owners, Don and Becky Hein, strive to recreate the experience of being welcomed into their home kitchen. “We have received such a warm welcome from the community,” says Don. “We want to be that place that you bring people when they come to visit because they can’t get the same experience anywhere else.” Having lived in Vista for several years, Don and Becky are enthusiastic to have their one-of-a-kind bakery just down the road from their home, adding to Vista’s already exciting local flavor.
